This year promises to be just as exciting - Greenwich Council has organised live street entertainment in the town centre to be enjoyed in a traffic-free environment.

Greenwich Car Free Day aims to encourage people to reduce car use, and promote alternative forms of transport. This year will have a strong focus on cycling with a range of cycling themed attractions and activities.

Did you know that Greenwich has a car club? Usually pocket nappies have a waterproof layer so does not need a wrap.
Other older type of nappies are: square terries, square muslins and prefolds. Nappy laundry services usually uses prefolds, because they dry quicker when unfolded. The most inconvenient aspect of using these older types of nappies is that they don't fit well around the legs and so leaks can happen.

- size: different types of nappies can be designed to fit a baby all the way from birth to potty or in several sizes. Birth-to-potty nappies usually are designed to fold on themselves when they are being used for a newborn baby. Because of this folding some parents find these type of nappies a bit bulky for their newborn baby and would prefer the best fit from the start. Sized nappies have the advantage of fitting better but you will have to buy a new set of nappies each time the size changes. With sized nappies, there are normally only two sizes to consider. Extra sizes might be available for premature babies and for toddlers.

- fastening: Velcro fastening or poppers? For the nappy to continue to fit as baby growns, almost all nappies have several poppers or velcro fastening across the tummy, and some have poppers by the legs. Velcro gives you more flexibility for the fastening so there's a perfect snuggle. With the nappies that fasten with poppers you might find that the nappy is a bit tight and the next popper the nappy is loose. Some parents don't like velcro because sometimes nappies stick together when they go through the wash. Some nappies are fasten-free, such as Contour nappy from Imse Vimse.

- fabric: Cotton terry is a good absorbent fabric to use for nappies. It also drys quickly. Cotton flannelette on the other hand is not as aborbent as terry but is more economical. Using a flannelette nappy with a terry booster is the most economical and yet effective nappy system. Both terry and flannelette can be unbleached or organic. Unbleached cotton do not use bleaching chemicals to make it white and organic cotton is produced in accordance with environmental guidelines. There are new fabrics entering the market such as hemp and bamboo - we will post more information regarding these fabrics.

The Event at Southwark Park, 12 July

1pm - 10pm, Saturday 12th July 2008

Southwark Park won the prestigious Green Flag Award 2006 to recognise and reward it as one of the best parks and green spaces in England and Wales. (check photos )

We spent the whole day discussing, demonstrating and advising about cloth nappies. Next to us were Hackney Real Nappy Network (HRNN) also giving advice and information to local residents. We were so happy to know that a member of HRNN bought a very good night nappy from us some time ago (babybeehinds) and another member started cloth nappies with us(!), and now actively participates in the network. You see, cloth nappies can become addictive!

If you live in Hackney why not become a member of the Hackney Real Nappy Network. The network is a very welcoming group of mums, dads and carers who use cloth nappies and have loads of experience and tips to share with you.

Stokefest website: http://www.stokefest.co.uk/
Hackney Real Nappy Network: http://www.hackneyrealnappy.net/

Camden Green Fair, 1 June

Camden Green Fair at Regents Park is by far the biggest event of its kind. Green Me are joining the many organisations in promoting greener living. We will have our entire range of cloth nappies and will be demonstrating to you how fun and easy they are to use

If you really want to learn how to live in a greener way, Camden Green Fair is the place to be. It will have a life-sized recreation of an environmentally friendly home where you can walk in and learn all the steps you can take to make your home greener. Then maybe you'll want to try the knitting workshop, or just enjoy world music and local bands on a renewable-energy-powered stage, or even watch a movie at a solar cinema. Your children will love the mini city farm and horse-and-cart rides, and your baby will be happy knowing that mummy is learning how cloth nappies are fun and so easy to use...

You also will have the opportunity to test-drive electric cars - maybe it will be your next car...

more info: Camden Green Fair & Bikefest website

photos: urban 75

The Dulwich Park Fair, 18 May

The Dulwich Park Fair (formerly the Green Fair and Party in the Park) will be held this coming Sunday 18 May, from 12 noon to 6pm.

It will be the third year we are participating in the fair and if it is anything like the previous years will be a wonderfully exciting, positive and inspiring experience for everyone. It educates, informs and empowers women and men who care about the environment.

The Environment Agency Lifecycle Study of Disposable and Reusable Nappies(LCA) which had concluded that neither disposables or washable nappies had a better or worse environmental performance is currently undergoing review. WEN, who had challenge the report, is dependent on membership and donations and have already incurred a £5000 shortfall in contributing to this review, with their expert consultants putting forward a fair case for reusable nappies. If they are to be enabled to continue the process and address the issue fully when the LCA is published at the end of February, WEN needs substantial donations to cover their costs in providing expert commentary and media representation. All of us, parents, babies, environmentally aware companies, the UK environment and the planet stand to gain from a fair outcome. WEN needs your support.

Please affiliate to WEN and make your donation online For more information email nappies@wen.org.uk

If you would like to become a WEN member from only £20/year(individual) or £35/year (group), please visit their website at:http://www.wen.org.uk/general_pages/support.htm

Lewisham January 'Nappuccino'

Come along to find out more about Real Nappies and Lewisham's £30 voucher, and to speak to experts and parents who use and love Real Nappies.
